In this blog I tell you about a hike I never wanted to finish, the three questions I asked myself at the top, and why the edge you keep backing away from might be the doorway to your next level.
-Rebecca Misek
I was standing on top of a mountain I did not like.
If I had rated my state from one to ten right then, I was at about a three. My intuition had told me this was not a good idea, and we’d gone anyway. Now I was at the top with the whole climb down still ahead of me.
You see, that was the moment I had to live by what I teach.
What I Did Up There
I stopped and asked myself three questions.
What am I going to do with my body?
What am I going to do with my mindset?
What meaning am I giving this?
Then I started talking out loud. I am unshakable. I am invincible. I am fearless.
Something shifted. My state was completely different, and that shift got me back down that mountain safe and alive.
The mountain stayed exactly the same. I was the one who changed.
Later I caught myself thinking, “That was the worst hike ever.”
It really wasn’t. I’ve been on one that was far more dangerous, and we never should have done that one. This one was just very challenging.
I faced it, I came out the other side, and I got to step back and look at how I showed up. Now I know a little more about what’s possible the next time.
The Bullseye I Keep Drawing
Picture a bullseye. In the middle is your comfort zone. Just outside it is your fear zone.
You bump into that edge and you get a choice. You can retreat and shrink back to where it feels safe. Or you can walk straight through the fear zone and land in growth.
Here’s the thing. Your growth zone becomes your new comfort zone. It’s bigger now. And then, sure enough, you find a new fear zone waiting at the edge of it.
Comfort zone. Fear zone. Growth zone. New comfort zone. Rinse and repeat.
I’ve learned to look at that edge and say, “Opportunity. Let’s go.”
State Is Everything
I’ve been a trailblazer since I was nine years old. I started a Bible school, then a church, then a business.
If anyone has had the chance to burn out, it’s me. And I can tell you what keeps me out of burnout.
State. It’s everything.
So do the reps. Every time you choose your state, even on a mountain you didn’t want to climb, you build the strength for the next one.
Where This Leaves You
On a scale of one to ten, how willing are you to be uncomfortable in this season?
Whatever number you picked, what would it take to make it a ten?
Where are you standing at the edge of your fear zone right now, deciding whether to step back into comfort?
That’s the work. You don’t have to love the mountain. You get to decide who you will be on it.
If something in you stirred while reading this, please don’t let it fade.
That feeling is you ready for the next step, and you are more capable of it than you realize.
Our free guide was made to meet you right here. It will help you start choosing your state on purpose, one rep at a time, so the next hard climb finds you steadier, braver, and more yourself.
