It was Christmas Eve. The excitement of the party was over. As the crowd began to disperse I stayed behind to clean up. Showing up fully and serving has always been my love language. I do it naturally. Even then a small twinge of I wish someone would help me passed through my heart.

As I was stacking chairs and wiping tables a small group approached me. My tired heart leapt at the thought of help coming. Instead they pulled me from my tasks to let me know they were leaving the church.

Disappointment coupled with confusion. And that led to the deep pain of rejection. The next morning I realized nearly half of the congregation was gone.

What followed was not one hard thing. It was everything at once. A marriage that ended with revelations that rewrote my past. A global pandemic that turned masks into panic attacks and took my breath in the most literal sense. A day on the living room couch. Children on the floor. Where I let myself simply cry and chose life like a vow from the deepest part of my soul.

On the other side was a little girl in a white dress. The one who had spent a lifetime trying to earn closeness. Hiding what she loved. Carrying sacred things alone.

I knelt down and told her what she had always needed to hear.

You are enough. You are never too much. Welcome home.

That moment did not end my story. It started a new chapter. One built not on managing myself into competence but on becoming the kind of person who could hold others without losing herself in the process.

Years in leadership had taught her what true transformation looked like from the inside, and what it cost when it never arrived.
