What If Your Mission Was Never Lost?
In this blog we unpack why your mission was never lost, and why most people spend years searching outward for something that was buried inside them the whole time.
-Rebecca Misek
You know that thing where you tear the whole house apart looking for your sunglasses, and they're on your face the whole time?
I had a client tell me a version of this. She was tearing her house apart looking for her car keys. Couch cushions on the floor. Purse dumped out on the counter. Late, frustrated, about to give up. Her daughter walked in and said, hey mom, they're in your hands.
You see, most people treat their purpose the exact same way. Like it's lost somewhere out there. Like there's a version of their life sitting on a shelf in some other city, and if they could just find it, everything would click.
So we wait. We research. We take another quiz. We read another book. We ask another mentor.
And you know what we do?
We stay exactly where we are.
Here's the thing.
Your mission is not missing. It's not hidden from you. It's been leaving clues your entire life.
You Can't Excavate From a Low State
Before we go any further, I have to say this part first, because it changes everything else.
When you're in a low state, everything slows down to a screeching halt. You lack resourcefulness. Nothing's going to work right. The gears just freeze up. And you cannot dig for your own clues from a place like that.
When you're in your head, you're dead. When you're in your heart, you're smart.
Holding onto a beautiful state, especially at the start of your week, is not a nice-to-have. It's the ground you have to be standing on before any of this works.
The Clues Have Been There the Whole Time
So what do the clues actually look like?
They show up in what you love.
What really lights you up.
What breaks your heart when you scroll the news.
What makes you furious when you see it done wrong.
They show up in the things you'll do for free. The thing people keep coming to you for. The conversation you cannot stay out of.
It's not hiding from you. It's buried, under years of conditioning.
Under be practical.
Under who am I to do that.
Under maybe someday.
And we keep looking, and we keep searching, and we never truly find it, because they're just sediment.
Searching Is Not the Same as Excavation
Excavation is different from searching.
Searching looks outward and waits for lightning to strike.
Excavation looks at your own life and starts digging.
So let me ask you what I ask my clients.
What pain in this world do you understand better than most people?
Because the place where you've been hurt, the place where you've struggled, the place you've had to fight your way through, that's usually the exact place you're equipped to lead someone else through.
You paid the tuition.
Most people never cash in the education on that.
When You Can't Stop Talking
Pay attention to this one.
Have you ever been talking to someone and they light up, and they can't stop talking, and they just go and go and go?
Take note of that.
That's what lights them up.
I had a client who spent a whole month saying, I don't have any idea what I'm meant to do.
We started working through it together.
What's something that really upsets you?
What are the things you can't stop talking about?
What are the things that light you up?
And finally she said, I think I know.
For me, it's coaching.
I was being interviewed for a podcast recently, and the second we touched on it, I lit up.
That's what gets me out of bed in the morning.
That's what supercharges me through the week, no matter how many hard, difficult, or struggling situations show up along the way.
What's the Clue You've Been Ignoring the Longest?
What pain in the world do you understand better than most people?
What's one thing people keep coming to you for, even when you're not trying?
What has be practical buried in you?
And who's handed you the shovel, or who's about to?
Your mission was never missing.
It's been in your hands the whole time.
